Effect of 6 - Benzylaminopurine on the Growth and flowering in Soil and Hydroponically Grown Chrysanthemum

Abstract
The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of benzylaminopurine (BA) on plant growth and development in different cultural systems for cut flower production of Dendranthema grandiflora cv. Baekgwang. Stem thickness, leaf area and the number of lateral branches were increased by BA treatment, but root growth was temporarily retarded with BA treatment. Stem elongation was also inhibited at higher concentrations of 300 and 400 ppm BA. Chlorophyll content was decreased with BA treatment, and showed temporary wilting at higher concentrations. Zeatin content in the leaves was increased from 24 hours to 48 hours after BA treatment, and decreased thereafter. ABA content was rapidly increased until 3 hours after BA treatment, and then decreased as the zeatin content increased. Flowering was proportionally delayed as the concentration of applied BA increased. Effect of BA treatment was more sensitive at the hydroponically grown chrysanthemum than soil grown one.
